“It's an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco.  It must be a delightful city and possess all the attractions of the next world.”                                                                                                                                   Oscar Wilde (1854-1900, Irish Poet, Playwright, Author)

FISAE XXXIX: San Francisco Bay 2022

Building International Friendships through the Exchange of Art

Greetings Friends of FISAE!

The worldwide organization of FISAE is unique as we have the privilege of getting together every two years in a different country to meet and build friendships through the exchange of art without regard for religious or political beliefs.  We experience the cultures, explore the region’s music, dining, libraries, & museums.

Since the FISAE Congress at Naantali, Finland 2012 our society has invited the members of FISAE to attend our Centennial Celebration in the Republic of California at Jack London Square on San Francisco Bay in 2022. This will be 22 years since our congress in Boston and in the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) you will witness the most active and stimulating Book Arts Movement in all of the Americas (perhaps the world).  I am pleased to say the American Society of Bookplate Collectors & Designers (ASBC&D) is now part of this Movement.

Everything has started in San Francisco since the Gold Rush of 1849!  The Free Speech Movement, Hippie Generation & Summer of Love, High Tech, Book Arts, and more.  As part of the High Tech industry there are familiar products and services known worldwide that started in the SFBA including: Microsoft, Apple, Google, Airbnb, Uber, Yahoo, Expedia, Facebook, LinkedIn, PayPal, and more.

Location, Accommodations, & Convenience

The weather in this region of the USA is perfect all year round making the SFBA a desirable and popular destination. The Waterfront Hotel at Jack London Square in Oakland has been selected for our congress activities since conference facilities are pleasant and the views of San Francisco Bay are outstanding.  It is only a 3-minute walk to the SFBA Ferry Landing where there are shuttle boats every 20-minutes for a quick ride across the Bay into San Francisco.

Our Centennial Celebration has been carefully planned with consideration for your budget and convenience.  To accommodate every participant all hotels in this neighborhood will have special negotiated FISAE rates.  From California vineyard wine tastings to fine dining you will discover dozens of restaurants within a 5-minute walk. This includes Steak, Seafood, World Cuisine, and Vegan options.  Chinatown is only a 10-minute walk from Jack London Square offering countless dining possibilities. After dinner we will visit clubs that feature Classical, Country-Western, Rock, or Jazz & Blues music all in this same neighborhood.

In addition to exchanges 24 hours a day, there will be exhibitions, lectures, receptions throughout the SFBA at such places as the Book Club of California, San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco Center for the Book, Museum of Modern Art, University of California at Berkeley, American Bookbinders Museum, etc.  During the Congress we are planning group studio tours to visit well known artists, publishers, printers, and printmakers who produce books and bookplates.

Now the ASBC&D has over 22,000 followers on networking sites across the internet.  You will see many new faces at this FISAE Congress!  Your support for our congress will introduce ex libris art to the next generation of collectors and artists!!  Introducing our 125 year old tradition of “building international friendships through the exchange of art.”  It is crystal clear, that reaching the next generation of collectors is a necessity for artists, the future of the bookplate, bookplate societies, and FISAE.

I look forward to seeing you again at the Congress at Prague this year.  On behalf of the ASBC&D, I am planning an illustrated PowerPoint presentation for the Delegates Meeting.  Attached to this letter you will see our wood engraved FISAE logo by SFBA book artist, Richard Wagener.

Do we have your support for San Francisco?   Feel free to drop me a note!       (See Attached)

CHEERS!
